Sure enough, Nick appeared at the top of the ridge. He moved Sugar to the ravine’s edge and peered into the underbrush. He thought he saw the black and lightly patched calf, who, upon seeing Nick above, began bellowing.

Nick dismounted and walked to the edge, trying to figure out how he would get her out of the predicament.

He had a rope on the saddle but wasn’t sure it would reach. Leaning over farther for a better look, he slipped. By the time he realized what was happening, he didn’t have time to gain his balance because he was tumbling head-over-heels down the embankment. He landed hard. As he heard a loud snap, his head hit a rock, and that was the last thing he knew.

Zasper, the grackle, saw the entire horrible event. Below, near the crying calf, lay Nick—unconscious.
